The affair of Queen Caroline Mathilde, (wife of mentally ill King Christian VII of Denmark) with the royal physician Johann Friedrich Struensee and the historic events surrounding them come on the big screen from director Nicolaj Arcel.

Based on Bodil Steensen-Leth’s erotic novel “Prinsesse af blodet” (Princess of Blood) the film, which is narrated by the Queen Mathilde, shows how doctor Struensee having gained King’s trust and Queen’s love managed to rise to the position of “de facto” regent of the country. Being a strong supporter of the ideals of the Age of Enlightenment he tried to make revolutionary reforms. But it remains to be seen whether the aristocrats and the people were ready for them or not. Will his royal affair save or destroy him? (More from wikipedia-Struensee and wikipedia-royal-affair).
