Baz Luhrmann’s new movie is actually an old one.

This is a great challenge for Mr Moulin Rouge! And indeed the mood of Moulin Rouge is all around this new movie too. In New York 1923 the parties and glamourous life of the rich upper class is in the centre of the film. Based on the novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald named “The Great Gatsby” (first published in 1925) this is the story of a mysterious wealthy man in New York, as seen through the eyes of a young writer. Since the original movie was incredible, it is really hard for Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan to stand against Robert Redford,  Mia Farrow and Sam Waterston.

The original 1974 movie had won two Oscars (Best Costume Design and Best Music). On the other hand Baz Luhrmann’s “Moulin Rouge!” was nominated for eight Oscars and won two (Best Costume Design and Best Art Direction-Set Decoration). A bit more history. Robert Redford was 38 years old when he played the role of Jay Gatsby, the same age as Leonardo DiCaprio is now that he plays in this film. Also, Leonardo DiCaprio was born in 1974, on the same year that the original movie released. By that time Robert Redford had only been nominated for an Oscar once (The Sting(1973)), whereas Leonardo DiCaprio has already been nominated for the golden statuette three times (What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), The Aviator (2004) and Blood Diamond (2006)).

Mia Farrow was 29 years old when she played Daisy Buchanan in the original movie and Carey Mulligan is 27 now that she plays the same role. But Carey Mulligan has already been nominated once for an Oscar (An Education(2009)) whereas Mia Farrow was never nominated for an Oscar.

The first movie was released on March 29th 1974 while its remake will be released on December 25th 2012 (in the US). Something like a Christmas present for all the Leo fans out there.

Updated info (20/10/2012): Leo fans will have to wait for a little while since the release date of the movie has changed. It will open on May 10, 2013 in the US, avoiding the competition with other December blockbusters like “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”.

Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Tobey Maguire

Movie Trailer Quote: “You always look so cool. The man in the cool beautiful shirts.”
